Meet Marnie - aka the Queen of Perth meal delivery

Hail the kale was founded by Marnie, a foodie with a passion for health, sustainability and great design. Occasionally known as the Queen for Perth meal delivery, we asked Marnie a few questions to get to know her better.

What made you start hail the kale?
I have a genuine love for simple, healthy food and I decided to turn this passion into a reality. I first focused on Instagram and YouTube with healthy meal prep recipes and created an eBook (all while full time teaching!!) which grew a following of amazing people who gave me the confidence to create hail the kale products. We started at the Claremont Farmers Markets and grew a small but genuine following from there. We were able to test the market and gain valuable feedback which assisted us in building our wholesale lines. I personally found it difficult to find healthy prepared meals that were fresh and flavoursome, so I knew other people would be in the same boat. We stock our bowls in selected supermarkets and now also offer Perth meal delivery. You can pick n mix or choose popular bundles with a variety of flavours.

What do you love about your job?
I love the variation that with the job, no day is ever the same! Being my own boss and passionately running a business that was built from the ground up is a very rewarding (but challenging!) process. Being hands on and in the kitchen, testing out recipes and seeing all the bowls prepped is always satisfying. The kitchen team are now on fire with the prep! I have a passion for design and photography, so I get far too excited about new packaging, glossy stickers and photoshoots! (Massive design geek over here!) I also love getting positive feedback from customers, it sounds cheesy but it really makes my day and is a motive to keep going on the tough days!

Do you have a favourite bowl?
I am currently hooked on the the miso happy bowl! We are doing a limited time collaboration with Peko Peko which features their ever so popular miso and ginger dressing. It is bursting with freshness and I have it on repeat! I know I am not alone when I say I could drink it with a straw!

What motivates you to work hard?
I love making a difference to how people feel. If I can help people to make their life easier and healthier than that’s a really good motivator. I just want our customers to feel the way I do when I eat in a way that nourishes my body, as I know it changed my life when I started to see the impacts of healthy living.

What healthy habits do you believe in?
This probably won’t come as a surprise, but eating fresh, balanced, minimally processed meals is really important for me. For me personally, having healthy prepared meals just makes keeps it easy.  I’ve always been a fan of batch cooking a massive amount of veggies and protein and loading up the fridge with all things healthy. If there isn’t rubbish in the fridge then I don’t eat it!  When I eat well, I feel amazing, even if I’m flat out. I also try my best to have a good sleep routine to rejuvenate and incorporate 15 minutes of meditation into my day every day after lunch. I find it really helps with grounding myself (something I need to do often!) and allows me to reflect.

What guilty habits do you have?
I love a glass (or two.. or three!) of wine and I love to eat hot chips as a treat! Nothing beats hot chips, ultimate guilty pleasure!

What is something most people don’t know about you?
I nearly made it onto Masterchef! I first applied when hail the kale was a side business, however now that it’s my main job I’m not allowed on as a home chef. It would have been a great experience… but glad I am hailing the kale full time now!

If you weren’t doing healthy food delivery, what would you be doing?
I am a teacher by trade so I’d likely be doing teaching in some capacity. Probably making healthy lunch boxes for the kids on the sly – tricking them into good habits from a young age!
